I- Physical Properties

1-1 PHASE DIAGRAM:

* Soil is a three phase system consisting of

- Solids
- Water
- Air

 The relationships between these phases describe the Weight - Volume Relationships

Total Volume = VT = Vs + Vw + Va
Total Weight = WT = Ws + Ww

Depending on amount of water in the voids, the soil unit weight can be:

a- Dry Unit Weight
b- Saturated Unit Weight
   - Fully Saturated &
   - Partially Saturated

c- Submerged Unit Weight

1- Water Content:

    wc = Ww/Ws

2- Void Ratio (e)

e = Vv/Vs

3- Porosity (n)

n = Vv/VT

4- Degree of Saturation (Sr)

Sr = Vw/Vv

5- Relative Density (Dr)

Dr = (emax - emin) / (emax - efield)
