Sustainable ENERGY SCIENCE & Engineering Center
1. MISSION
The
Sustainable Energy Science & Engineering Center (SESEC) is set up to
address the most challenging energy issues related to the use of alternative
energy through the development of innovative solutions for consumers and
industry. In particular, the need for energy systems that have much lower
emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse materials to the atmosphere is
of paramount importance. This center will help to develop a portfolio of
pre-commercial research programs to explore reliable, affordable, safe and
clean energy technologies of the future. A key objective of SESEC is to
encourage future commercial application of the technologies that flow from the
research. The center will apply its expertise in technology transfer to make
sure that society at large benefits from its research.
á SESEC will first focus the creativity of universities faculty and talented students to develop and carry out research activities that cross-fertilize solutions of energy and environment. This is accomplished with the formation of interdisciplinary research groups that focus on problems with long-term payoffs and produce well-trained graduates who can build on their university experience in industry.
á
SESEC will promote industry and government
collaboration and participation in the research activities that will be
critical if promising technologies are to move beyond the stage of initial
demonstration to commercialization. The center will help bring industry
perspectives to research groups to understand real-world barriers that limit
technology implementation. The center will form a consortium of small-scale
businesses involved in energy, environment and related fields.
SESEC provides products, services and information that
help industry, especially entrepreneurs, to solve problems or capitalize on
opportunities related to, producing, delivering and using alternative energy
technologies. More specifically, SESEC:
á
Implementation of
technology development programs for the alternative technology industry and
other clients, including local, state and federal government.
In
addition, SESEC plans, manages and aggregates funding for collaborative R&D
programs of interest to individual companies, consortia, and government
agencies that choose to invest with SESEC.
education
and TRAINING:
SESEC
helps to strengthen the alternative energy industry through its education and
training programs. Both seasoned and new alternative energy industry
professionals can learn about technologies, operations, and related business
topics. Educational options include the following:
á
Open-enrollment
classroom courses
á
E-learning through the
Internet
á
Conferences and
workshops on timely issues to keep industry personnel informed and connected.
á
Provide energy and
environmental outreach (namely, technical assistance, student internships and
training) programs to secondary and higher (K-20) educational institutions and
Florida industry and businesses.
SESEC Journal, a quarterly magazine that provides an
overview of current programs and projects.
SESEC will establish initially a number of
specialized facilities for technology development and implementation.
