Senior Design Project - Group 19
The Air Force Research Lab’s Advanced Warhead Experimental Facility located at Eglin Air Force Base has presented our senior design team with a project entitled Visualization in Granular and Fluid Media. This project was created to obtain a means to acquire data about dynamic interactions between projectiles and the granular and fluid media they impact to optimize performance when designing penetrators. We will be most interested in granular media, namely sand and soil. Currently it is difficult to visualize such interactions given the unique characteristics of these media, driving the demand for a system that can overcome these obstacles to obtain useful data to characterize a media’s dynamic properties. Our design sets out to accomplish this task using a test bed equipped with an array of micro-electro-mechanical-system (MEMS) accelerometers. The MEMS accelerometers gather information about velocities, forces, and accelerations at various points within the media that can be used to generate graphs depicting the flow of the media as it is impacted by a projectile.
