Course Objectives
What is a brushless DC
motor ? Is it better than a plain DC motor ? These are some of the questions
that you will be able to answer at the end of this course.
This course is an introduction
to electromechanical motion devices for students interested in robotics,
controls and low power automated system. The students will learn the basic
operating principles of DC motors, stepper motors, etc. MAPLE V and MATLAB/SIMULINK
will be used for analysis and simulation.

Homework and Project:
-
Besides the regular personal
homework there may be a group project. The class will be divided into groups
of no more than 3 students. Students must pick their group partners by
the second week of classes. Students who do not form groups by then
will be arbitrarily assigned to groups formed by the instructor.
-
All assignments are due in
class on the date and time specified. No late homework will
be accepted.
-
For your homework use one
side of the page and staple all pages together before class. Do
not use ripped-out sheets from spiral notebooks. Failure to do show
will result in a reduced grade. Illegible assignments will not be graded.
Exams & Quizzes:
-
Make up tests may be arranged only
for students who miss a scheduled test due to severe illness. The instructor
may consider other extreme circumstances. Travel due to job interviews
is not an acceptable excuse. In either case, no student will be given a
make-up exam unless the instructor is notified of the absence before the
test. Notification must be made by calling the instructor. Failure to follow
this procedure will result in a grade of 0. Students that qualify for a
make-up test must present a written petition together with supporting evidence.
-
You will have one week after the day a graded exam or homework is returned
in class to make any claims regarding your grade. No claims will be considered
after that period.
-
It is the responsibility of the student to attend to all lectures and arrive
on time.
Grading Policy
-
Student performance will be
evaluated on the basis of weekly homework, group projects, two written
tests and one final exam. All this work is to be conducted with academic
integrity keeping with the Academic Honor Code.
-
Grading Scale: A: 100-85,
B:
84-70, C: 69-55, D: 54-40, F: 39-0.

Important Reminder
Excerpts from Florida A&M
University: General Catalog 1993-95
Registration:
A student is not enrolled or registered until all necessary fees are
paid and validated by the office of student accounts. (pg. 24).
No student will receive credit for any courses for which the student
is not properly registered. (pg. 25).
Class Attendance Regulations:
Students are responsible for all assignments, quizzes, and examinations
at the time they are due and may not use their absence from class as
a plea for extensions of time to complete assignments or for permission
to take make-up examinations or quizzes. Absence from class for cause:
(a) participation in recognized university activities, (b) personal illness
properly certified, or (c) emergencies caused by circumstances over which
the student has no immediate control will be excused by the dean or director
of the unit in which the student is enrolled. (pg. 26).
Class attendance is compulsory for all students. A student will
be permitted one unexcused absence per credit hour of the course he or
she is attending. A student exceeding the number of unexcused absences
will be dropped from the course and assigned the grade "F". (pg. 26)
Excerpts from Florida State University:
General Bulletin 1995-96
Class Attendance Regulations:
Students are expected to attend all of their scheduled University
classes. The University reserves the right to deal at any time with individual
cases of non-attendance. The effect of absences upon grades is determined
by the instructor. A student reported for excessive absence in any
course may be required by the academic dean to drop the course with the
grade of "F". (pg. 67).
Registration:
Registration is not complete or official until all financial obligations
are satisfied (pg. 33).
Students will receive credit only for those courses in which they are
properly registered. (pg. 43).
