Brief Vita
1980-Present | Samuel Awoniyi received a Ph.D. degree in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1980. He is a professor of industrial engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. He was chairman of the Industrial Engineering Department from May 1986 to August 1989, and from January 1992 to July 1993. He was also Associate Dean for Curriculum and Instructions from July 1996 to July 2004 at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
Dr. Awoniyi has won several teaching recognitions. In 1989/90, he was nominated by the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering for a university-wide "Advisor of the Year" award. In 1993/94, he won a Florida "Teaching Incentive Program" award.
Dr. Awoniyi specializes in numerical optimization. He is currently investigating new homotopy-based algorithms for nonlinear equations and optimization problems (also known as numerical continuation methods). He is also using concepts of homotopy-based algorithms to investigate aspects of the simplex algorithm's practical efficacy (on linear programming problems).
Dr. Awoniyi has published articles in Mathematical Programming, The Engineering Economist, Industrial Engineering, Journal of Nigerian Institute of Industrial Engineers, the International Journal of Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing, Journal of the Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineers, Journal of Engineering Education and various conference proceedings. He has received research sponsorship from the U.S. Army, the National Science Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the University of Ibadan (in Nigeria).
Dr. Awoniyi is a Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), USA, a Member of the Mathematical Programming Society, USA, and a Member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), USA. From 1992 to 1995, he served as a member of several committees of the Engineering Economy Division of ASEE. He has also served extensively in committees and academic administration at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
