The History of
|
The FAMU / FSU College of Engineering chapter of Tau Beta Pi had its beginnings starting in 1987 at the college. After 5 years of teaching, the college of engineering began the FAMU / FSU Engineering Honor Society. This society was an independent honor society meant to recognize outstanding students at the college of engineering.
In 1991, the national Convention of Tau Beta Pi in College Station, Texas voted to grant the FAMU / FSU Engineering Honor Society a charter. This vote was the culmination of hard work on the part of many professors and students at the college to gain a chapter for FAMU and FSU. The two student representatives at this convention were Bradley A. Freathy, Thomas V. Baran (to be the inaugural President and Vice President respectively) and advisor Dr. Fred O. Simons Jr.
The following Spring, in February of 1992, the official installation of Florida Eta was performed by Tau Beta Pi President, James W. Johnson Jr. as well as the national officers and visiting Tau Beta Pi alumni. At the installation ceremonies, the chapter Bent, the well-known 4 foot polished oak bent in the college atrium, was given to the college by Dr. Thomas J. Harrison.
The inaugural officers of Florida Eta included:
