Chapter History

Our FSU-SHPE chapter was founded in 2003 with a small group of 10 students willing to contribute to the Hispanic community by beginning this chapter. Throughout the years, chapter membership has increased greatly. Today, our chapter membership has augmented to 60 registered members, a 600% growth in 7 years.

Our chapter is now an affiliate with the FSU's Hispanic Latino Student Union. We participated in major campus events such as the Regional HLSU conference, elder tutoring, and the DREAM Act Week, where the student body supported the national movement in pro for the education opportunity for immigrants. We also participated in community service events such as Viva Technology, Light the Night and Halloween Howl.

Our SHPE chapter has 17 members actively participating in our improved Board. The six main executive board positions being the President, External Vice President, Internal Vice President, Treasurer, Public Relations, and Secretary, oversee the rest of the board. Each of the main six positions is in charge of supervising one or two other board positions. This system was implemented this year, and has improved the efficiency within our chapter in the completion of tasks. In addition, this system has also served to develop leadership skills to the executive board members.

An important addition to our chapter history that occurred during this year was the initiation of the pilot of our first SHPE Jr. Chapter in Tallahassee. Although there is still work to do to get this project running, we are proud that the first steps have been taken. It is our desire that for next year our SHPE Jr. Chapter will be well established.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, FSU-SHPE increased its membership by 33%. The goal to increase our membership will remain for the next year.
