Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Recipient of the 2011 Vires Award
At the Leadership Awards Night, held April 5th, FSU recognized students who have epitomized the definition of leadership by their exemplary contributions to Florida State University through academic achievement, voluntary service, or organizational leadership involvement in fraternal, honorary, or student interest organizations.
This year, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers FSU Chapter are the recipients of the 2011 Vires Award for showing exemplary determination and perseverance in the area of leadership development as students, as an organization and as members of their communities.
FSU-SHPE has attained many goals since its foundation in 2003. The local chapter is part of a national organization created in 1974, by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles, CA. The FSU-SHPE student professional organization has grown from a small chapter of just 10 members to a large chapter of over 75 in under 10 years.
The FSU-SHPE Chapter's goal is to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields within its community. To that end, the organization has started the first SHPE JR. Chapter in North Florida where engineering students mentor local area high school students, encouraging them to go to college and pointing out the benefits of a degree in engineering.
FSU-SHPE has also formed the first professional chapter consisting of engineers working for local companies such as City of Tallahassee and General Dynamics.
In her nomination letter, Stephany Azuero, an FSU undergraduate in industrial and manufacturing engineering and a member of FSU-SHPE, wrote, "I feel FSU-SHPE is deserving of this award for going above and beyond ours and others expectations of our abilities. We have surpassed our high goals with flying colors and have done so with passion, motivation, selflessness, and above all teamwork. We've worked together as a team, as mentors, as students, and as friends to further develop our leadership skills and inform others what we stand for. We are proud to say that our members enter the organization as aspiring students, and graduate as leaders and professional engineers."
