Jacksonville Street Named for Dr. Thagard
The City of Jacksonville renamed a two-block section of Fifth Street "Norman E. Thagard Blvd." in honor of Dr. Norman Thagard, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of College Relations at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. The change was initiated by Mayor John Delaney and Councilman Mike Hogan to recognize Dr. Thagard's accomplishments in the U.S. Space Program, culminating with his participation as a Cosmonaut aboard the Russian MIR Space Station.
The section renamed for Dr. Thagard passes in front of Paxon High School, his alma mater in Jacksonville. The dedication ceremony on September 23th was attended by Welcome Shearer, the Principal at the time of Dr. Thagard's attendance, several of his former teachers, and his best high school friend.
