Superintendents' Pre-Launch Briefing
The Florida A&M University - Florida State University College of Engineering's newest educational venture, the Challenger Learning Center, hosted a daylong organizational workshop for area school administrators.
A Superintendents' Pre-Launch Briefing was held to inform area school superintendents, curriculum specialists and science coordinators about program offerings for middle grades students. Although the facility will not be operational until January 2001, Program director Richard D. Fisher wanted to make schools aware that classroom-based program and teacher professional development services will formally begin in August 1999.
Attending the briefing was Commissioner Bill Nelson, James Ammons of FAMU and Larry Abele of FSU. Bill Montford, Superintendent of Leon County Schools, and Mayor Scott Maddox. Also attending were Jack Miller, Dean FSU College of Education, Melvin Gadson Dean of FAMU's College of Education, and Betty Coxe, of the Florida Department of Education.
Participants were welcomed by Ching-Jen Chen Dean of FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and Norm Thagard, Director of College Relations, and former astronaut/cosmonaut. Dr. Thagard was featured as a speaker, enthralling participants with his experience on the Mir Space Station and other space missions. At the conclusion of the briefing Dr. Winston Scott, NASA astronaut made a surprise visit and greeted participants.
