SUCCEED Succeeds; Preparing for the Second Five Year Project
SUCCEED (Southeastern University and College Coalition for Engineering EDucation) is one of six coalitions comprising NSF's Engineering Education Coalitions Program. The main purpose of this NSF program is to effect a comprehensive revitalization of undergraduate engineering education for the 21st century. The member schools of SUCCEED are: FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina A&T, NC State, the University of Florida, North Carolina at Charlotte, and VPI. Together these schools are working to increase the quality and quantity of engineering graduates, increase the participation of women and minorities in engineering, and to design, implement, evaluate and disseminate new approaches to curriculum content and instructional delivery.
SUCCEED is now completing its first five years. SUCCEED has developed various processes and systems that may be used to renew and update engineering curricula. A proposal for SUCCEED to continue for a second five-year period is now under review by NSF following an impressive site visit in December 1996.
SUCCEED shall concentrate on implementation in the next five years, and the areas of focus are:
- Faculty Development
- Student Transitioning
- Outcomes Assessment
- Technology-based Curriculum Delivery
Implementation teams have been formed in each member school. The FAMU-FSU focus area leaders are:
- Professor G. Buzyna (Faculty Development)
- Professor S. Nnaji (Student Transitioning)
- Professor N. Yazdani (Outcomes Assessment)
- Professor B. Wang (Technology-based Curriculum Delivery)
Full implementation should start in July 1997.
