Scott Assumes New Position at College of Engineering
Florida State University announced today that Winston Scott is stepping down as Vice President for Student Affairs to take a teaching and administrative position in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
In a letter to FSU President T. K. Wetherell, Scott asked to be relieved of his duties as Vice President for Student Affairs to assume his new position. "I remain committed to the well-being of the university and look forward to working with the staff and faculty in the College of Engineering."
"We are very pleased to have such a distinguished engineer and former astronaut join our administration and faculty" said Ching-Jen Chen, Dean of the College of Engineering.
Lawrence G. Abele, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, said he would take on the additional role of acting Vice President for Student Affairs until Scott's position is filled. Scott will rejoin the engineering faculty today. In 1987-88 he served as an Associate Instructor in Electrical Engineering at the college as well as at Florida Community College in Jacksonville.
A U.S. Navy captain, NASA astronaut and engineer, Scott left NASA to become Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at FSU in August of 1999. He became Vice President for Student Affairs in January 2000. A native of Miami, Scott earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music in 1972 from FSU. Scott also holds a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School.
