ChE Lab Cashin' in on Student Success
After COE's Dr. Loren B. Schreiber proposed a "bet" to students taking his ChE Unit Operations Lab course, Ted Cothran, former COE student came back to town to announce the Professor was right. The 2004 Chemical Engineering grad, who now works for Shell as a Surveillance Reservoir Engineer, handed over an acknowledgement and a "cool" $100 to Schreiber because of the "deal" with the professor. The money goes as a donation to the ChE lab and will be matched by $200 from Shell Oil Company.
Schreiber tells all students in their first ChE Lab class,"This class will be one of the best courses you take in all of your University studies." Confident that his students will realize this in their engineering careers, Schreiber re-enforces the deal with a wager of $100 to each student if he is not right. Cothran took the "deal" to heart and had to pay up when he discovered the Professor was correct. Cothran entertained a group of COE students while handing over the cash to Schreiber.
Fielding questions from the students, Cothran had some advice for them, "Put lots of effort in your studies including things like time management and organization; I have to say teamwork is probably the most important thing that you use in this field and pay attention in Dr. Schreiber's - class you'll find it very beneficial."
Schreiber remarked, "Ted Cothran was an excellent student and teammate, whose creativity and initiative led not only to his personal success in this course, but also to dramatic improvement of the experiments in our Unit Operations Laboratory."
