Safford Selected as Second Associate Flight Director

Kathy Safford, a 25-year veteran teacher was selected as the second Associate Flight Director for the Challenger Learning Center at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. Safford follows Susan Borland who was selected last February as the first Associate Flight Director for the soon to be built aerospace education center. Both teachers will remain employees of Leon County Schools. The two Associate Flight Directors were chosen from a number of teachers applying for the position. Richard D. Fisher, Program Director, reported that the caliber of candidates made the decision extremely difficult for the committee of Challenger Center and Leon County School officials. Safford will leave her teaching position of 12 years at Cobb Middle School to take her new assignment.

Safford has had a long-term fascination with space illustrated by her request to receive an application for NASA’s first teacher to fly with the Challenger mission in 1984. "It just wasn't the right time," related Safford. As a mother with three children Safford felt that another opportunity would come her way. And now Challenger is coming back into Kathy Safford’s life. "I will truly miss Cobb, " says Safford, "but this is exactly where I want to be."
