Phase II Opens for Fall 1998 Semester

In what may be a record for university construction in Florida, the College of Engineering's Phase II building opened for classes at the beginning of the Fall 98 semester on August 24, just 18 months after the groundbreaking in February 1997.

Designed by the Tallahassee firm of Gilchrist and Crowe, with Ajax Construction as the general contractor, the three-story building almost doubles the College's space, and brings the facility in line with the present student population of over 2000, and over 80 faculty. With more than 90,000 sq. ft., it holds two classrooms with capacities of up to 100 students, some smaller ones, and 30 faculty offices to relieve the congestion of Phase I. It also has several new specialized laboratories, a large main conference room and a number of smaller ones. A second lot meets the demand for additional parking spaces.

College administrative offices moved into larger space in the new building which accommodates offices for Research and Industry Services, Development, and the Challenger Learning Center. State-of-the-art computer and communication facilities, fiber optic wiring and classroom video projectors, and relocated computer workrooms offer students and faculty the latest equipment for engineering instruction and research.
