Civil and Environmental Engineering student Gustavo Munoz will participate in the Department of Homeland Security's Center for Preparedness and Catastrophic Event Response (PACER) Summer Scholars program during the summer of 2008. Gustavo is one of only nine undergraduate students across the country to be accepted to the program and will receive a stipend of $4,500 to conduct research for ten weeks during the summer. For his research, Gustavo will be working with Dr. Ken Walsh in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering to investigate seismic control strategies for mitigating the effect of blast loads on structures. In particular, Gustavo will evaluate the potential for using the Resetting Semi-Active Stiffness Damper (RSASD) to dissipate the large amount of vibrational energy associated with buildings subject to blast loading. The results of his summer research could lead to new techniques for protecting civil engineering structures against the devastating effects of explosive blasts.
