Terri R. Norton, Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering was recognized for her outstanding achievements as a graduate student. She has been awarded the Graduate Student of the Year Golden Torch Award from the National Society of Black Engineers. She was honored at the Golden Torch Awards ceremony on March 24, 2005, during the NSBE 31st Annual National Convention held in Boston, MA.

Terri was also awarded the Graduate Student Leadership Award given at the 19th Annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards Conference in Baltimore, MD, February 17-19, 2005. This distinguished award honored innovators who demonstrate commitment to engineering expertise, leadership and managerial dash. The winners were also recognized for contributions as role models and mentors, helping to boost the minority presence in the technology enterprise.

An article from the US Black Engineer Magazines reports: Terri Norton is a hurdle climber of a different kind. She tackles gross acts of nature. Her passion is defeating wind and earthquake damage through vulnerability analysis and natural hazard mitigation. And even though still a student, her reach is world-wide.

Terri has presented her research at five U.S. conferences and three international ones, and been a field mission investigator evaluating the 2002 Molise earthquake in Italy. She was also a visiting researcher at the University of Tokyo on three different occasions, as well as a research assistant in the Wind Hazard and Earthquake Engineering lab at FAMU-FSU, and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Nebraska. In addition to being a Ph.D. Candidate, she is currently a visiting assistant professor in the Division of Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology at FAMU.

Terri completed her BS degree in Civil Engineering from Florida State University and MS in Structural Engineering from Florida A&M University. She has received a number of awards and honors in addition to being named a Ronald McNair Exemplary Fellow, a Presidential Fellow and a GAAN Fellow and has been cited in "Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities".
