MathCounts Competition Held at College of Engineering
The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering was the host for the 1999 MATHCOUNTS competition held on February 20th.
MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program that promotes seventh-and eighth-grade mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory.
MATHCOUNTS is one of the country's largest and most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students. Presidents Bush, Reagan and Clinton have all recognized MATHCOUNTS in Oval Office ceremonies, and the program has received two White House citations as an outstanding private sector initiative. Jointly sponsored by the Mathcounts Foundation and the National Society of Professional Engineers, the local competition was organized by the Big Bend Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society with the assistance of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
Seventy-five students from local area schools participated in the event which included both individual and team competitions. The winners received a trophy and a trip to Orlando for the statewide competition.
Maclay School won the team competition, followed by Augusta Raa, Deerlake and Swift Creek Middle Schools. Zachary Harper, Brendan Linn, Michael Lewis and Brice Humphrey were the individual winners.
