The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is proud to announce that Christopher K. Roberts, a Civil Engineering student, has won the 2010-2011 FSU President's Humanitarian of the Year Award and the Student Seminole Award at the April 5, 2011 Leadership Awards Night.

Amy Chan Hilton, a faculty instructor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, enthusiastically and strongly recommended Roberts for the humanitarian award honor.

"Chris embodies the spirit of the Humanitarian of the Year Award, as you can see from his application and letters of support. He has dedicated a significant amount of his time to public service. Chris has provided much leadership and talent to these endeavors, most notably with Habitat for Humanity and The BIG Event, a student organization he founded," Chan Hilton wrote in her letter of recommendation. She added, "For example, Chris has been extremely successful in fundraising for FSU Habit for Humanity, securing over $200,000 to sponsor four Habit homes. It is remarkable that Chris has been able to sustain this high level of involvement with community service throughout his studies at FSU while maintaining a high GPA in a rigorous engineering program. He has my whole-hearted support in this nomination for this honor."

In his application for the Humanitarian of the Year Award, Roberts reflected, "I feel very fortunate to have come to a university that empowers students with such diverse and accessible opportunities to participate in as well as lead service activities and initiatives. My service experiences have taught me that when I look beyond my own wellbeing and focus my efforts on helping others I inevitably create situations that facilitate success and happiness for everyone involved."

Tyler Turkle, Executive Director, Big Bend Habitat for Humanity, in his letter of recommendation on behalf of Roberts has said it best, "Christopher Roberts presents a choice of distinction for this award. I believe Chris has all of the acquired and innate characteristics to accomplish the mission of your great school and exemplify what the President's Humanitarian of the Year is and should be. He is a credit to Florida State University and to our community."

Kamal Tawfiq, Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, congratulated Roberts on his awards, "The CEE department as well as the College of Engineering are very proud of your accomplishments at both the service and the academic levels. Thanks to Dr. Joe Donoghue and Dr. Amy Chan Hilton for their encouragement and support to your efforts."

For his mentoring efforts, Joe Donoghue was awarded the Advisor of the Year Award for his involvement in FSU Habitat for Humanity, which was recognized as Organization of the Year.

Congratulations to Civil Engineering’s Chris Roberts, who is the FSU President’s Humanitarian of the Year 2010-2011 and Student Seminole 2010-2011.
