Local High School Students to Participate in JETS-Sponsored Competition
On Saturday February 21, 1998, some of the brightest high school students from the Tallahassee area will meet at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in Innovation Park to participate in the 19th Annual Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science (TEAMS) Competition. TEAMS is a dynamic group academic competition for high school students across the country.
TEAMS is an event that is hosted each year by the College of Engineering of the Florida public universities that have engineering colleges. The day-long competition involves students working together to solve problems and answer questions related to engineering, technology, mathematics and science. Today, cooperation and group strategy are important competencies in engineering and technology. TEAMS introduces students to these group competencies.
High schools can compete at the Varsity or Junior Varsity level in one of nine divisions, which are determined by school enrollment. Top-scoring teams in each division in each state will be eligible for national rankings, which will be determined by eligible teams' performance on the second portion of the two-part test.
Local high schools participating in the JETS TEAMS competition include: FAMU, Lincoln, Godby, Richards, Leon, McClay, North Florida Christian, and Quincy Shanks. The FAMU/FSU College of Engineering will host the eight participating high schools at the College of Engineering located at 2525 Pottsdamer Street (Innovation Park) from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on February 21st.
TEAMS is sponsored nationally by the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS). JETS is a national, non-profit education society that provides programs for students interested in pursuing a career in engineering, technology, mathematics or science in college.
