College of Engineering Green Apple Day of Service

It's common to find students at the College of Engineering on a Saturday. Not only do students have access 24/7, the quiet atmosphere provides an opportunity to keep your mind clean and clear. But on Saturday, September 29th, if you took a stroll behind building B to the retention pond, some students weren't looking too clean.

Various student organizations such as Engineers Without Borders, American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers took part in a volunteer cleanup in an effort to beautify the green spaces surrounding the COE. Throughout the day, volunteers removed trash and excessive algae from the retention pond perimeter.

This event was in honor of Green Apple Day of Service, an international effort to promote healthy schools.

Coordinators of the event worked with FAMU Plant Manager, Kendall Jones and our very own Donald Hollett to leverage the COE's resources for the event. Overall the cleanup brought together students, faculty and staff, ultimately creating a greater awareness of our immediate environment and opportunities to improve it.

A special thank you goes out to everyone contributed their valuable time. Moving forward, the retention pond may play a role in the senior design projects that students embark on each year. Take a look at the site and let's hear your ideas!
