ABET Announces 2009 Diversity Award Winners

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering has been selected as one of three engineering programs in the United States to receive the 2009 Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity, awarded annually since 2005 by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET).

According to the ABET October 1st News Release, "ABET is the recognized accrediting body for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. The organization's diversity award is named for the late Dr. Claire L. Felbinger, a Public Member on the ABET Board of Directors and a leader in promoting diversity initiatives for technical fields. The award recognizes educational units, individuals, associations, and firms for extraordinary success in achieving diversity and inclusiveness or for facilitating diversity and inclusiveness in the technological segments of our society."

"The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is pleased to be recognized with the 2009 ABET Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity," remarks Dr. Ching-Jen Chen, Dean of the College. "One of the four goals in our college mission specifically states "... to attract and graduate a greater number of minorities and women in professional engineering, engineering teaching and research'. As a result, we are proud of the more than 2,200 of the most diverse and brightest students and having achieved a diversity among the student body of 50 % white, 35% African American, 11% Hispanic and 21% female. Ultimately, we hope that this recognition will assist us in attracting even more under represented minorities to the field of engineering and to our College's academic programs, through the efforts of our Faculty and Staff."
