The faculty and staff of the Civil Engineering Department honored their graduating seniors on April 22, 1999 with awards ceremony and refreshments. Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji, coordinator of this year's event acknowledged all the graduating se niors and encouraged them remain in touch with the department. The Department chair, Dr. Jerry Wekezer, provided some statistical information on the graduating class. He encouraged the students to subscribe to life long learning. In particular, he called the attention of the graduates to the need to obtain their Master’s degree in view of the current thoughts about making the Masters degree as the entry degree into civil engineering practice. Dr. Primus Mtenga announced special recognition and presented c ertificates to the following graduates. Rashaan Bines, Joeseph Carol, Jeremiah Easley and Katherine Shuler received certificates for superior academic performance for maintaining a GPA 3.50 and above. Stephen Hurston, Andre Haynes and Jeremiah Yam, and w ere cited for superior service to the department, college, community or to their fellow students. Vincent Thomas received a certificate for superior perseverance.
Congratulations go to Rashaan Bines for winning the very competitive National Science Foundation three year Graduate Fellowship award for 1999. Bines is one of 256 awards made nationwide to engineering students. He will be attending Cle mson University to work towards the Ph.D. degree in Environmental Engineering. Congratulations also go to Jennifer Price for winning the US Department of Housing and Urban Development award for graduate studies in Urban and Regional Planning. Price wi ll attend Florida State University.
Congratulations also go to Andy Richardson for being designated as an Outstanding Teaching Assistant by the FSU Program for Instructional Excellence in recognition of distinguished contributions to excellence in college teaching. Richar dson is one of only fifteen graduate teaching assistants honored by the University with this award.
Speaking of excellence, congratulations go to Dr. Andrew Dzurik and Dr. Soronnadi Nnaji recipients of the Professorial Excellence Program award and further to Dr. Dzurik for also receiving the Teaching Incentive Program Award.
