TALLAHASSEE, FL - The highly anticipated launch of the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee, the K-12 outreach of the Florida A&M University Florida State University College of Engineering has begun. The Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee will open its doors to the public March 2003, exactly one year from now.
The construction process has already begun on the Northeast corner of Kleman Plaza. Thus far, all construction work has been subterranean, however steel erection will begin later this month. The building has been designed to compliment the ambience of Kleman Plaza and downtown Tallahassee. The Center’s architect, Monty Stark of Hicks Nation Architects, Inc. has worked closely with the Kleman Plaza Design Review Board and the Capitol Center Planning Commission to create a signature piece in downtown Tallahassee. Part of the Center’s flare is attributed to the artwork on the facade of the domed planetarium located on the corner of College and Duval.
The Challenger Learning Center is expected to draw ten - fifteen thousand middle school students each year from the 66 county tri-state service area, which includes North Florida, South Georgia and Southeast Alabama. The facility is also expected to serve 200,000 college students, families and visitors to the area making it a regional destination.
