Congratulations to Dr. Oates on Second Early Career Award

The National Science Foundation has awarded a grant of $400,000 to Florida State University for support of the project, entitled "CAREER: Materials Driven by Light: Nonlinear Photomechanics of Liquid Crystal Elastomers," under the direction of Dr. William S. Oates. Dr. Oates has served on the faculty of the Florida A&M University-Florida State University College of Engineering since 2006.

Dr. Oates, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, was selected by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as one of 33 rising stars at 24 U.S. universities to participate in the agency's Young Faculty Award program for 2009.

Dr. Chinag Shih, mechanical engineering department chair and professor, upon receipt of the award announcement remarked, "Please join me in congratulating Dr. Oates for his outstanding achievements. This is his second Early Career Award and this one is from NSF. He will be the first ME faculty receiving this honor."

This award is effective February 15, 2011 and expires January 31, 2016.
