'The Science Brothers' Make Science Sizzle for Kids
FSU Alumnus Bill Porter, an electrical engineer, has been instrumental in the development of a non-profit education outreach program called 'The Science Brothers', designed to get kids interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities. Porter graduated in 2009 with a BS in Electrical Engineering from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.
The outreach program is based out of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) and funding is provided by National Defense Education Program (NDEP) grants. The 'Science Brothers' pick up where an old 90s show called "Doctor Science", left off with the two sons of Doctor Science, Bill and Dan Science, competing over who's field is 'cooler' to kids. However, the over-arching theme of both programs was and is to show kids the science behind the wonderful things in our world!
Porter and Dan Flisek, his brother in science, provide free of charge, scientific demonstrations disguised as entertainment for elementary schools in Bay and neighboring counties. Their efforts result in a fun and wacky trip exploring different premises in science: light, sound, energy, with examples and demonstrations from the realms of chemistry, physics, and electricity.
