Richie Beyer, P. E., County Engineer Elmore County, Alabama Installed as NACE President
The NACE 2012 Annual Management and Technical Conference, held in Lexington, KY from April 1 – 5, 2012 saw the installation of Richie Beyer, P. E., County Engineer, Elmore County Alabama as its President.
In attendance were approximately 400 delegates and speakers, 200 exhibit representatives, and over 100 guests at the conference.
Highlights of the Opening ceremonies included remarks from Secretary Mike Hancock, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and Lenny Eliason, President of the National Association of Counties. The Keynote Presentation was given by Victor Mendez, Administrator, Federal Highway Administration.
Beyer has worked in county engineering for 17 years, serving as Elmore County Engineer since 2003. With a county population of approximately 80,000, he is responsible for 800 miles of paved roads, 200 miles of unpaved roads, and 127 bridge structures. Mr. Beyer earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Florida State University and is a registered Professional Engineer in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. He served on the Board of Directors for the Association of County Engineers of Alabama (ACEA) from 2003-2009 holding offices through President. He served on ACEA committees pertaining to subdivision regulations, floodplain management, joint equipment bidding, highway safety, and education and training as well as various committees for the Association of County Commissions of Alabama (ACCA). He also served on the state's SMART Taskforce for Highway Safety, Every Day Counts STIC for Alabama, and serves as a Montgomery MPO Technical Coordinating Committee Member. A member of NACE since 2003, he previously served as Alabama State Director for the NACE Board of Directors and currently serves on the NACo Transportation Steering Committee.

E., County Engineer, Highlands County, FL as Secretary-Treasurer; Dennis McCall, P.E., Butler County AL as Southeast Region Vice President; Duane J. Ratermann, P. E., County Engineer, Knox County IL as North Central Region Vice President; David Brand, P. E., County Engineer, Madison County, OH as Northeast Region Vice President; George A. Johnson , P. E., Director of Transportation & Land Management Agency, Riverside County, CA as Western Region Vice President, and Brian Keierleber, P. E. County Engineer, Buchanan County, IA as South Central Region Vice President. Additionally, Susan G. Miller, P. E., County Engineer, Freeborn County MN was selected as Rural County Engineer of the Year and Phillip M. Demery, P.E., Transportation & Public Works Director Sonoma County CA was selected as Urban County Engineer of the Year. David L. Reinke, Jr., P.E., Engineer, St. Clair County Road Commission MI was selected the Project/Program Manager of the Year.
The National Association of County Engineers, with approximately 1900 members in 50 states and Canada, has a four fold objective: (1) To advance county engineering and management by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and information, (2) To foster and stimulate the growth of individual state organizations of county engineers, (3) To improve relations and the spirit of cooperation among county engineers and other agencies in the solution of mutual problems and (4) To monitor national legislation affecting county transportation & public works departments and through NACo, provide NACE legislative opinions.
