Higher Education Research Experiences (HERE)

GPA Requirement: minimum 2.5

Requirements: This program is open to U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents who are currently enrolled in an A.S. or B.S. degree program with a minimum GPA of 2.5/4.0, including those who have completed a B.S. within the past year.

Majors Desired: Be pursuing a degree or career in science, mathematics, engineering, technology, or related fields

Description:Higher Education Research Experiences at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (HERE at ORNL) provides research opportunities and associated activities for students at all levels, beginning the term before college entrance through thesis/dissertation research, and higher education faculty. The program is designed to complement academic programs by utilizing the unique resources of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to enhance science, mathematics, engineering, and technology education, encourage careers in science and technology, and improve scientific literacy, while at the same time contributing to the Laboratory mission.

Minority Serving Internship Program

GPA Requirement: minimum 2.5

  • at least 18 years of age
  • attending a participating Minority Serving Institution(list found here
  • enrolled as a degree-seeking student maintaining a minimum of a half-time academic course load
  • Majors Desired: core sciences, business, media, transportation, journalism, accounting/finance, and English

    Description: DOE NNSA Office of Diversity administers the Minority Serving Internship Program (MSI). Candidates are U.S. citizens and attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Native American Institutions (NAI), as well as other participating academic institutions to include collaborations with professional associations, such as the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and the Society of Scientists dedicated to fostering the success of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American Scientists (SACNAS). Candidates have started to apply and resumes are available for review. More resumes will be received over the coming months. Last summer LLNL received more than 200 candidates. In addition to the core sciences, majors include business, media, transportation, journalism, accounting/finance, and English. Candidates are undergraduates and graduate students. They receive external funding to cover their stipend, travel and usually lodging. There is a small cost to the hosting/line program.

    LSU Center for Computation & Technology REU

    GPA Requirement: at least a 2.75

    Requirements: Interested in a major that is within the computational science umbrella (leaves out few majors as it includes all sciences, mathematics, engineering, finance, statistics, etc.) with at least a 2.75 GPA, considering a career in research and/or graduate school in your major, and a US citizen or permanent resident

    Description: This Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) project is a nine week program where students work collaboratively on a wide variety of computational science projects. Each student receives a stipend of $4,500, free housing in university dormitories, and up to $500 in travel expenses to and from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. 14 students will be selected.

    Bank of America Internship

    Requirements: Preferred Grade Point Average of a 3.0 on a 4 point scale. Candidate must be a US citizen or have permanent US residency. Technical skills should include knowledge of several of the following technologies: UNIX, Windows NT/2000, network architecture, databases, desktop and server hardware, information security concepts and technologies, project management skills and financial industry knowledge.

    Majors Desired: Candidates must be enrolled in a full-time degree program, pursuing a major in Computer Science, Business, Engineering, or Information Technology.

    Description: The Bank of America Intern Program is designed to provide students with corporate experience in business banking policies and practices. Students are given a true associate experience, as internships mirror full-time positions and include goal-setting and a formal review process. Interns are required to work 40-hour weeks for 10 weeks between the months of June and August. On-the-job training, mentoring relationships, and networking opportunities are provided for all interns.

    NSF REU - Massive Online Social Networks

    Requirements Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Be and remain and undergraduate in good standing at least until December 31, 2011, with at least one year of college/university course work completed as of September 1st, 2011. Have taken a course in Data Structures or Algorithms with a grade of 'B+' or above. Plan to complete a degree program. Agree to work a minimum of 40 hours per week at the REU site. Attend all required lab meetings. Not to have other jobs/internships during the REU program or to be registered for any courses. Be ready to prepare and submit a written report of the work done. Be ready to give an oral presentation of work performed at the REU site.

    Description: The objective of this REU site program is to provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in research activities in massive online social networks (MOSN) and to work under the close supervision of expert faculty.

    Purdue Summer SURF Program

    GPA Requirement: 3.0

    Application Deadline: March 11

    Requirements: Undergraduate students enrolled at Purdue or other U.S. institutions of higher education in a baccalaureate degree program and who will continue to be enrolled the following Fall session are eligible to apply. Due to the requirements of the research projects, the SURF program is designed for undergraduates who have completed at least four semesters and obtained the academic background for the project by the time the program begins in May. Students must be at least 18 years old at the time the program begins.

    Description SURF students participate in research activities on campus full-time for 11 weeks. During the summer, undergraduate students conduct research, attend weekly professional development seminars, participate in a research poster symposium, and attend social activities.
