The Florida A&M - Florida State Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers evolved from the Florida A&M University Chapter, which was originally chartered on February 27, 1986. The original advisor was Ms. Flozelle Haynes, currently the Coordinator of Retention at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. There were 17 members in addition to seven officers in the initial chapter. By the 1994-1995 academic year, the chapter had grown to over 140 members with 8 officers positions and 11 committee chairpersons responsible for various components of the chapter endeavors.
