This site contains a fully functional design for a solar collector testing station. The testing module consists of several parts. The most important part is the solar collector. The solar collector module is a scaled down representation of the solar panels used today for water heating. The panel size is 2x3 ft which is scaled down from a standard 4x8 ft panel. The panel is heated using 6 300 W Halogen flood lamps which give the design the capability to simulate the solar flux it would experience on an average day. The design also contains a 2 ft copper pipe heat exchanger for removal of the heat from the solar collector. The design implements the use of a 1/3 horsepower motor giving the ability to test any size solar collector desired. The design also implements multiple testing sensors to measure Temperature, Pressure, and the flow velocity which have the capability to send the data to the computer to be analyzed on Lab View. This allows the design to be used in the class room for educational purposes or in industry to benchmark different designs of solar collector or heatexchangers.
