William
S. Oates, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, joined
the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering
in Fall of 2006. Dr. Oates received a dual B.S. degree (1995) in Mechanical
Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and in Mathematics
from Georgia Southwestern University. He obtained his M.S. (2001) and
Ph.D. (2004) from the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Georgia
Institute of Technology where he conducted research in the area of piezoelectric
device design for morphing wing technologies and ferroelectric fracture
mechanics. In the fall of 2004, he joined the Center for Research in Scientific
Computation at North Carolina State University as a post doctoral research
fellow where he conducted research on nonlinear control of smart material
systems and structures. His research interests include experimental and
theoretical solid mechanics, multiscale modeling of ferroic materials,
and nonlinear control of smart systems and structures.
