Peter N. Kalu, Associate Professor, earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science at Imperial College, University of London, United Kingdom in 1986. He had earlier obtained his B.Sc. (First Class, Honors) in Engineering Physics from the University of Ife, Nigeria in 1980. Dr. Kalu has since worked for the U.S. Department of the Navy, Naval Post Graduate School at Monterey, CA and A.S.&M./NASA Langley Research Center, VA. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1994, and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Materials Science, Mechanical Metallurgy and Engineering Mechanics. Dr. Kalu is also the Director of NSF-PREM program, which is focused on mentoring female and minority students in Materials Science and Engineering. He has been engaged in various aspects of research on the physical metallurgy of aluminum and copper alloys, with particular interests in the mechanisms responsible for the development of microstructure and texture during processing of materials. He is also involved in the novel technique of magnetic processing of materials, and the development of high temperature, high-strength Al alloys for diesel engines. Dr. Kalu is affiliated with National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Tallahassee, and has been collaborating with research groups at Naval Air Warfare Center, Patuxent, MD. His research is supported by NSF, DOE/ORNL, NASA and Cummings Engine, Columbus, IN.
