Hamid Garmestani, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, received his Ph.D. degree from Cornell in 1989 and then joined Yale University as a research Scientist. Since coming to FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in 1990, Dr. Garmestani's research has focused on microstructure/property relationship in advanced materials including composites, superplastic, magnetic and thin film layered structures. Using statistical continuum mechanics (higher order probability functions) and neural network approaches the microstructure of these materials (texture, microtexture) are correlated with property and processing condition. Microscopy techniques such as SEM/TEM together with OIM and x-ray Texture analysis have been used to obtain mesoscopic information in polycrystalline (and semi-crystalline polyethylene) materials. Special attention was given to insitu characterization of materials! As an example, the effect of strain on magnetic properties of magnetic sensors were measured using an insitu microtensile stage. Several processing paths including superplasticity, cross-rolling, and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) have been investigated for their contribution to texture and grain boundary distribution. More recently, high temperature magnetic annealing has been used as a new process for texturing of magnetic materials and the production of highly oriented nano-magnets.

Dr. Garmestani is a member of the editorial board of International Journal of Plasticity and the Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. He is presently funded ($1.2 million/year) through the Army, NSF and NASA. He was the primary investigator in the acquisition of three major instrumentation proposals through NSF, and NASA.
