Graduate Admissions Requirements

General Requirements
updated 03/11/2008
Applicants for the graduate program are expected to have(at
a minimum) a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or any
one of the following approved majors: any
engineering major, Material Science and Engineering, Chemistry,
Applied Biochemistry, Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematics,
Applied Mathematics, or Computer Science. Additional
fields may be eligible for consideration at the discretion
of the Graduate
Coordinator.
Requirements for Non-Majors
In recognition of the interdisciplinary nature of our graduate
program the department has established guidelines for the
admission of non-majors (applicants without a degree in
Mechanical Engineering. Non-majors will be subject to the
same deadlines and admission requirements. However, the
admission of non-majors must be approved by the admissions
committee. The committee will examine the applicant's transcripts
for evidence of exposure to the following core Mechanical
Engineering disciplines:
| Mechanical Systems |
|
Thermal Systems |
| Statics, Dynamics, Mechanical Systems |
|
Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics |
- EML 3011C - Mechanics & Materials I
- EML 3013C - Dynamics Systems
|
|
- EML 3015C - Thermal Fluids I
- EML 3016C - Thermal Fluids II
|
The committee will determine if the student has taken this
material (or a portion of it) as part of his/her previous
coursework, and assign credit accordingly. If the student
does not have exposure to one or more of the core disciplines,
the committee will require the student to take corresponding
coursework in the deficient areas as a condition of admission.
These courses will be considered remedial and will not
count toward the Student's degree program requirements.
The student may opt to challenge this requirement by taking
the appropriate graduate courses in the subject area and
passing with a grade of 'B' or better (in consultation with
his/her advisor and the Graduate Coordinator).
