Graduate Admissions Requirements

General Requirements | Requirements for Non-Majors | Supporting Documents | Financial Aid | Contact

updated 02/24/2009

General Requirements

Prospective students must have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, or in any one of the following approved majors: any engineering discipline, applied biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, material science, mathematics/applied mathematics or physics/applied physics. Non-majors (students without a degree in mechanical engineering) may be required to complete remedial coursework in mechanical engineering as a condition of admission (see Requirements for Non-Majors for details).

Additional requirements for admission include:

  • Minimum 3.00 upper-division GPA
  • Minimum combined verbal and quantitative GRE score of 1150
  • Minimum TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, or 80 on the internet-based test

Requirements for Non-Majors

In addition to the general requirements for admission, non-majors will need to show evidence of exposure to the following core mechanical engineering disciplines and/or equivalent coursework:

Mechanical Systems
Statics, Dynamics, Mechanical Systems

  • EML 3011C - Mechanics & Materials I
  • EML 3013C - Dynamics Systems

Thermal Systems
Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics

  • EML 3015C - Thermal Fluids I
  • EML 3016C - Thermal Fluids II

The admissions committee will review the student's transcripts and determine if the student has taken this material (or a portion of it) as part of his/her previous coursework, and assign credit accordingly. If the student does not have exposure to one or more of the core disciplines, the committee will require the student to take corresponding coursework in the deficient areas as a condition of admission. These courses will be considered remedial and will not count toward the student's degree program requirements.
