Admission Requirements
Candidates for the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy
Programs in the Department of Mechanical Engineering must fulfill the
general requirements stipulated by Florida A & M University and
Florida State University, as well as the specific requirements set by
the College of Engineering and the Department of Mechanical
Engineering. If an applicant satisfies the university's requirements,
but fails to meet the departmental criteria, which are generally
higher than that of the university, admission can be denied.

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

Good standing in the institution last attended.

Evidence through original transcript of a satisfactory academic record
from an accredited institution

at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 grade scale as an upper division
undergraduate student or a 3.00 on a 4.00 grade scale as a Master's
student;

or have a minimum combined score of 1000 on the verbal and
quantitative sections of the General Aptitude Portion of the Graduate
Record Examination (GRE).

Master Of Science

A baccalaureate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
If a Mechanical Engineering baccalaureate degree has not been
obtained, applicant will be required to satisfy deficiencies by taking
undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering.

A GPA of 3.00 (3.50 for international students) or higher in upper
division undergraduate education.

An official GRE score sent from ETS to the Admissions Office of the
preferred university. A minimum combined verbal and quantitative
score of 1150 (1350 for international students) is required.
International students also need to obtain a minimum TOEFL score of
550 (or 213 computer-based.)

Three letters of recommendation and a statement of professional goals.
Doctor Of Philosophy

A Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Before a student can be admitted to the Doctoral Program, he/she must
have received a Master's degree recognized by the department. A
student wishing to transfer from other disciplines should have
fundamental knowledge in a broad area of Mechanical Engineering,
including advanced mathematics, dynamics and controls, solid mechanics
and materials, and fluid and thermal sciences.

A minimum GPA of 3.00 (3.5 for international students) for graduate
course work at the previous institution.

An official GRE score sent from ETS to the Admissions Office of the
preferred university. A minimum combined verbal and quantitative
score of 1150 is required. International students also need to
obtain a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (or 213 computer-based.)
