To M.S. Online
Introduction

In the fall semester of 1999, the Florida A&M University - Florida State University (FAMU-FSU) College of Engineering began a radical new concept in Distance Education; the M.S. Online Program. This program makes it possible for a qualified student anywhere in the world to pursue the Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering through the Internet from either home or work.

The program fully integrates the online students into the existing graduate classes. Online students have the same assignments, deadlines, and examinations as local students. The program is designed to foster person-to-person interactions with faculty members as well as with other students, local and online.

All lectures are transmitted live over the Internet, allowing online students to ask questions during the lectures. Professors may be contacted during office hours by means of video conferencing to discuss lectures, research projects and other issues.

Although online students do not actually move to Tallahassee, Florida, they are part of the College of Engineering in all respects. The College of Engineering was founded in 1982 and offers degree programs in 5 engineering disciplines, all accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). Mechanical Engineering is the second largest department, having about 350 B.S., 30 M.S., and 30 Ph.D. students. For more information on the faculty and their research interests, please refer to the departmental web page at http://www.eng.fsu.edu/me/. The College of Engineering is jointly operated by the state universities in Tallahassee. Florida A&M University is a leading Historically Black University with an enrollment of over 10,000 students. The 1997-1998 Time/Princeton Review recently recognized FAMU as "College of the Year". Florida State University has an enrollment of over 30,000 students and is a leading Research I University. FSU is the site of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and other nationally recognized research and academic programs, as well as being the home of the Seminoles, 1999 National College Football Champions.
