Distance Tools

Students who want to take a web course from somewhere else than Tallahassee or Panama City need, in addition to what is listed in 'Basic Tools', the following equipment:

  1. A printer, to print out the signup form, tests, etcetera. They are also convenient to print out the lecture notes before class: then you can write additional remarks directly on these notes during class. See http://www.eng.fsu.edu/me/printit.html about how to print.
  2. A flatbed scanner to scan and submit your picture, homeworks, and other.
  3. A microphone to talk to the instructor or group during conferencing.

You will need the following software beyond what is found under 'Basic Tools':

  1. Netmeeting 3.0 or newer. Note that this requires a Windows machine. If you have a Mac, you will not be able to video conference with professors during office hours using a whiteboard. (You may still be able to video conference with them using CU-SeeMe, but without a whiteboard, it is hard to transmit formulas or figures.) Also, you could not attend electronic help sessions.
  2. Unless you have a postscript-capable printer, you will need software for printing.
