Benefits for Local Students

Even as a local student, you can greatly benefit if the class is offered on the Web. Some benefits you will have are:

  1. If you need to be out-of-town for some reason, you may still be able to attend the live lecture, if you have a computer and Internet connection. So you can ask questions while the material is being presented. You can also participate in active learning exercises. If you have a bad cold, attend the class from home!
  2. Lecture notes can be printed out beforehand, allowing you to concentrate on what the instructor says, rather than on copying it in your notebook.
  3. Chances of misreading or copying lecture notes incorrectly are eliminated.
  4. If your lecture notes are out of order, look on the web page.
  5. Lecture note quality is high.
  6. Lecture notes are cross-linked to the lecture that the instructor talked about it.
  7. The instructor can concentrate on getting the important points over to the class, rather than on writing on the blackboard and then checking and correcting this writing. This allows more attention on teaching instead of on algebra. (However, some instructors may still use the blackboard; the only requirement is that full lecture notes are available on the Web beforehand.) In short, you will probably get a better lecture and more attention from the instructor.
  8. Lectures are archived. So if you get sick, or if you miss class for some other reason, you can still view the lectures you missed. If you are out-of-town on business, you could take the lectures whenever you have time, maybe in the evening, and stay on track.
  9. You can view difficult lectures, or parts of lectures, a second or third time if you want.
  10. For a difficult class, you can start studying before the semester starts using the previous year's lectures.
  11. For an elective class, you can examine the class before you register for it.
  12. Do you really need a class and it is not offered? Take it from the archives!
  13. You can find full course information on the web page. This may beat searching for hours where you left some piece of paper.
  14. The instructor can add links to additional reference material, topics that are not covered, further explanations, etcetera, to the web page.
  15. You are likely to gain additional knowledge about computer and Web usage.
