Benefits for Online Students

While some Web course offerings elsewhere might be little more than conventional correspondence courses, the FAMU-FSU MSME Online program simulates the true classroom experience as closely as possible. You attend the live lectures, you follow the standard class deadlines and procedures, you use video conferencing to confer with the instructor and fellow online students, and so on. Some benefits:

  1. There will be no need to move to Tallahassee.
  2. There may be no need to travel to Tallahassee at all, or only once, depending on circumstances.
  3. The lectures can be attended 'live', allowing you to ask questions while the material is being presented.
  4. You will participate in the 'active learning' exercises during the lectures, and may be called upon to provide an answer. Not only is this fun, it allows you to compare yourself to the other students.
  5. You are encouraged to stay on after live lectures are over and use the chat window to form relationships with other online students. Exchange Internet addresses and start video conferencing!
  6. Since all dates and deadlines for the remote and local students are the same, there is a strong motivation to stay on track and on schedule.
  7. If you have too large a load, you are motivated to take half the classes, not the classes half.
  8. Lecture notes can be printed out beforehand, allowing you to concentrate on what the instructor says, rather than on copying it in your notebook.
  9. Chances of misreading or copying lecture notes incorrectly are eliminated.
  10. Lecture note quality is high.
  11. The instructor can concentrate on getting the important points over to the class, rather than on writing on the blackboard and then checking and correcting this writing. This allows more attention on teaching instead of on algebra. (However, some instructors may still use the blackboard; the only requirement is that full lecture notes are available on the Web beforehand.)
  12. Lectures are archived, allowing you to view missed lectures later. If you are out-of-town on business, you could take the lectures whenever you have time, maybe in the evening, and stay on track.
  13. You can view difficult lectures, or parts of lectures, a second or third time if you want.
  14. For a difficult class, you can start studying before the semester starts using the previous year's lectures.
  15. For an elective class, you can examine the class before you register for it.
  16. Do you really need a class and it is not offered? Take it from the archives!
  17. You are likely to gain additional knowledge about computer and Web usage.
  18. The department tries to provide a friendly, caring atmosphere. A major item of its mission is to increase women and minorities in engineering.
  19. You can get a degree from the College of the Year or the home of the FSU Seminoles.
