Outline
Admission to the dual degree program is open to juniors
who have attained a GPA of 3.2 or better in the mathematics
and core mechanical engineering curriculum. Applications
are normally invited in the spring, during the second semester
of the students' junior year, for fall entry into the program.
By this time, they have had an opportunity to establish
a good academic record and they are well known to the faculty.
A faculty committee reviews the records of student applicants
and those students selected for participation are notified
by the end of the semester in which they apply.
Admitted students follow the normal undergraduate curriculum
in Mechanical Engineering through their third year. In the
fourth year, the BS-MS curriculum differs somewhat from
the standard four-year track: the students take two graduate-level
classes in addition to the normal BS course load. BS-MS
students are required to attain the same level of performance
that is expected of traditional graduate students, namely
a grade of B or above in engineering courses, and an overall
average of B or above.
During the fifth year, students complete a program of seven
graduate courses. The graduate courses include five regular
graduate classes and a two-semester course sequence in which
the students participate in a practice-oriented externally
sponsored design project. An activity table of the BS-MS
Program is presented on the Curriculum
link for better clarification of the time line of the above-mentioned
events.
