College Mission
The mission of the College of Engineering is to provide an innovative
academic program of excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate
levels, judged by the highest standards in the field and recognized
by national peers; to attract and graduate a greater number of minorities
and women in professional engineering, engineering teaching and research;
and to attain national and international recognition of the College
through the educational and research achievements and the professional
service of its faculty and students.
Florida A&M University
The mission of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), as
an 1890 land-grant institution, is to provide an enlightened and enriched
academic, intellectual, moral, cultural, ethical, technological and
student-centered environment, conducive to the development of highly
qualified individuals who are prepared and capable of serving as leaders
and contributors in our ever-evolving society. The University seeks and
supports a faculty and staff of distinction dedicated to providing
outstanding academic preparation at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral
and professional school levels, with a particular emphasis on integrity
and ethical conduct. FAMU is committed to inspirational teaching,
exemplary research and meaningful public and community service through
creative partnerships at the local, state, national and global levels.
The University is also committed to the resolution of complex issues that
will enhance humankind. While the University continues its historic
mission of educating African Americans, persons of all races, ethnic
origins and nationalities are welcomed and encouraged to remain life-long
members of the university community. The University, through its diverse
faculty and staff, provides a caring, nurturing, collegial and respectful
environment.
Florida State University
The Florida State University is a comprehensive, graduate-research university
with a liberal arts base. It offers undergraduate, graduate, advanced graduate,
and professional programs of study, conducts extensive research, and provides
service to the public in accord with its statewide mission. The University's
primary role is to serve as a center for advanced graduate and professional
studies while emphasizing research and providing excellence in undergraduate
programs.
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Department
The Department of Chemical Engineering is committed to providing a high
quality and modern education in the basic principles and practices of
chemical engineering. In addition to maintaining a strong curriculum
incorporating the fundamentals of chemical engineering, new examples of
applications in the core courses from emerging areas of chemical
engineering are incorporated. These areas include (1) biotechnology and
biomedicine, (2) advanced materials (polymers, ceramics, and composites),
(3) computer-assisted process and control engineering, and (4) surfaces,
interfaces, and microstructure. With the rapid changes and added
complexities in the chemical engineering profession, it is also clear
that a greater emphasis needs to be placed on occupational health,
expanded safety practices in laboratories, environmental protection,
waste minimization and recycling.
Our educational goals concern improvements not only in the technical content of courses, but also improvements in the manner in which the material is taught. There is a continuing trend in engineering education to get away from traditional lectures in the classroom by increasing student participation and by including laboratory and computer demonstration projects to enhance and illustrate textbook material.
The goals of the Department of Chemical Engineering are to prepare its students for academic and professional work through the creation and dissemination of knowledge related to the field, as well as through the advancement of those practices, methods, and technologies that form the basis of the chemical engineering profession.
Civil & Environmental Engineering Department
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has the mission of
teaching the fundamentals of civil engineering science, analysis, design
and management to empower students to assume careers as professional
engineers, to conduct basic and applied research, to improve the state of
knowledge of civil engineering, to serve as a source of information and
advice to the community on engineering matters, and to assist in the
continuing education of professional engineers and other interested
individuals. The department has a special mission to provide an opportunity
or a civil engineering education for under-represented groups in the profession.
Electrical & Computer Engineering Department
The mission of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is to
provide an innovative academic undergraduate program of excellence to its
majors; to produce graduates whose academic achievements match or exceed
those of recognized state supported engineering colleges; to produce a
greater number of graduates from groups traditionally underrepresented
(especially, for historical reasons, African-American and female graduates)
in electrical engineering; and to achieve national and international
recognition through the excellence of its faculty and students research and
scholarly pursuits, as well as their professional and service endeavors.
Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering Department
The mission of the Department of Industrial Engineering is to provide for
students a solid industrial engineering curriculum coupled with a strong
research program driven by the economic and technologic development needs
of society.
Mechanical Engineering Department
Mission: to prepare graduates for diverse careers in mechanical engineering and related engineering fields.
Goals: to have students with excellent problem solving skills and with a
fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering that enables them to
continue their education throughout their careers and to function in a
diverse work force and society.
