2009-2010 Cisco Networking Academy Information

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and networking vendor Cisco have established a partnership program for high school and university students, university and state employees, and the general public to learn the skills necessary to prepare for rewarding jobs in computer networking.

Our Academy has been providing Cisco training since the year 2000, with many successful graduates.

Curriculum

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Cisco Networking Academy Program, offers courses intended to prepare you for the Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification. (Other curricula may be added to our Program in the future, depending on interest; see below.)

Both the CCENT/CCNA and CCNP curricula utilize a hands-on, experiential learning model. Each program consists of four separate courses, taught sequentially. All involve significant lab activity -- students learn primarily by doing. The courses also provide various opportunities for assessment of the student's learning and skill development.

Due to the nature of this program, students are expected to spend significant time reading and preparing outside of the scheduled class periods. This allows the time in the classroom to be utilized primarily for hands-on activities and individual attention from the Instructor.

Completion of the four-course sequence will provide a solid preparation for the certification exams, and excellent preparation towards a career as a Network Engineer.

(Certification exams are not included in the program, but reduced-cost exam vouchers are available to students who achieve a qualifying score on designated course exams. Our Academy does not offer exams, but there are local testing centers that do.)

Course Offerings for 2009-2010

*** THIS INFORMATION IS PRELIMINARY – PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES ***

Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT)
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)

Course # Course Title Start Date
CCNA 1 Network Fundamentals 09/2009
CCNA 2 Routers Protocols and Concepts 11/2009
CCNA 3 LAN Switching and Wireless 02/2010
CCNA 4 Accessing the WAN 04/2010

NOTE: If minimum enrollment is not met, classes may be cancelled.

Classes are held at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (These courses may also be offered at other times, if there is sufficient interest.)

Note that the first two courses in the this curriculum provide the material and experience needed for the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) certification.

CCNA 1: Network Fundamentals

This course introduces/reviews key fundamental concepts of network terminology, protocols and addressing, and provides opportunity to construct simple Ethernet networks. Cisco commands are introduced. Other topics include the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model, cabling and cabling tools.

CCNA 2: Routing Protocols and Concepts

This course focuses on router configuration, and use of key routing protocols. Students will develop skills in configuring a router, and managing Cisco IOS Software. At successful completion of CCNA 1 and 2, students are prepared to sit for the Cisco ICND1 exam, which qualifies them for CCENT certification and is one of two exams leading to CCNA certification.

CCNA 3: LAN Switching and Wireless

This course focuses on troubleshooting of common network problems. Key areas of study include Virtual LANs (VLANs), Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), as well as basic wireless network implementation.

CCNA 4: Accessing the WAN

This course introduces various advanced IP addressing techniques, WAN technology and terminology, PPP, ISDN, DDR, Frame Relay, and network management. Also included is basic discussion of Voice over IP and Video over IP, and their impact on the network.

Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)

Course # Course Title Start Date
CCNP 1 Advanced Routing 10/2009
CCNP 2 Remote Access 11/2009
CCNP 3 Multilayer Switching 02/2010
CCNP 4 Network Troubleshooting 04/2010

NOTE: If minimum enrollment is not met, classes may be cancelled.

Classes are held at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (These courses may also be offered at other times, if there is sufficient interest).

CCNP 1: Advanced Routing

Key topics in this course include selecting and configuring scalable IP addresses, use of multiple advanced routing protocols, access lists, and edge router connectivity.

CCNP 2: Remote Access

This course includes configuring asynchronous connections, PPP, ISDN, X.25, Frame Relay and AAA.

CCNP 3: Multilayer Switching

Key topics in this course include Fast and Gigabit Ethernet, VLANs, Spanning Tree, MLS and multicasting.

CCNP 4: Network Troubleshooting

This course discusses OSI layers 1, 2, and 3 in depth, and looks at various application protocols from a network-troubleshooting perspective.
