About Us
Although the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering has been in existence for merely 25 years, this joint institution of Florida A&M University and Florida State University has demonstrated great success in educating engineers for the future, implementing outreach activities to K-12 students, and conducting research to fulfill the needs of society. Committed to its motto, "Quality, Growth, and Diversity," The College occupies two state-of-the-art buildings with 200,000 square feet of classroom, office and laboratory space, with another two on the drawing board to be completed in the next ten years. These facilities have become the academic home for more than 2,300 undergraduate and graduate students.

The College's 90 faculty members are among the most accomplished scholars of the world. Currently, over $50 million of sponsored research is under multi-year contract and annual expenditures are approximately $12 million. The College boasts six university recognized research centers: the Florida Advanced Center for Composite Technologies (FAC2T) which became Florida's first National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC); the Center for Intelligent Systems, Control, and Robotics (CISCOR); the Sustainable Energy Science and Engineering Center (SESEC); the Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS); the Center for Nanomagnetics and Biotechnology (CNB) and the Undergraduate Research Center for Cutting Edge Technologies (URCCET). The high level of research productivity at the College of Engineering provides opportunities for more than 300 graduate students to conduct their research.

FAMU-FSU College of Engineering researchers address the engineering problems that must be faced in today's society. Researchers approach unprecedented challenges with creativity and versatility. From the development of lightweight, affordable composite materials for future combat systems, to the quietest jet engine for reducing noise pollution to biomagnetic materials used to detect a heart attack; FAMU and FSU researchers are actively solving engineering problems. Biomedical researchers are using tissue engineering to study persistent bronchial asthma. Electrical engineering researchers and students are studying ways to reduce the bioluminescence of marine phytoplankton to protect Navy SEALs as they enter into covert operations. Civil engineers are working to develop new technologies that limit damage to steel structures during earthquakes and hurricanes. These few examples of research illustrate the diverse experience and talent of the faculty.

With over 150 companies and government agencies as collaborative partners, Industry Day has become the showcase for the College's expertise as well as a medium for students and faculty to connect with the private sector and government colleagues. Approximately 30 companies and government agencies form the Executive Committee of the College of Engineering Advisory Council which is composed of top engineering managers from industry and government. Members of the Council meet twice yearly to further the College's mission and establish links with industry and government and assist in planning Industry Day events. The Council works with the College to promote the training of the next generation of engineers, to provide feedback to the College regarding industry's future needs and to assist the College by providing support in all areas of engineerin education.

Additionally, the College operates a Challenger Learning Center in downtown Tallahassee with a planetarium and IMAX theater to excite the younger generation by using space exploration as a theme to foster long-term interest in math, science, and technology. The Challenger Learning Center has received corporate and private support to further its mission: “to inspire, to explore, to teach. ”The College's industry and government partners are encouraged to contribute funds supporting educational outreach programs, student scholarships, a first year engineering lab, senior design projects, as well as research opportunities for faculty and the associated support of graduate students. These partnerships form the foundation for recruiting the best and brightest engineering students into today's global workforce.
