Ewb

FAMU-FSU EWB is a non-profit organization that advocates and has an interest in helping developing countries improve their quality of life through dependable and sustainable engineering designs. FAMU-FSU EWB also recognizes that it has a responsibility to educate its local community and its students on sustainable development's impact on the environment and on future generations.  Our organization’s mission is to help solve environmental problems through engineering solutions and to influence and educate our society and developing communities on the importance of taking action to improve our generation’s health and environmental condition before it has any further negative consequences.

Our vision is a world where all people have access to adequate sanitation, safe drinking water, and the resources to meet their various needs through environmentally friendly solutions. We believe that the scale of today’s problems necessitates a new way of thinking and a long-term approach. In order to solve these problems, there is a need for dedication of a new generation of professionals, working hand-in-hand with local communities, social scientists, public health officials, economists, businesses, human rights organizations, nongovernment organizations, and international development organizations.

History

The FAMU-FSU chapter of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) was founded in Spring of 2005 by Kyla Gregoire. Our faculty advisor is Dr. Tarek Abichou of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the FAMU FSU College of Engineering. Our mission is to partner with developing communities worldwide to improve their quality of life by implementing sustainable engineering design solutions, while training our members to become environmentally responsible engineering students and professionals.

FAMU-FSU EWB is a young organization but it is growing at an astounding rate and has been able to recruit many dedicated members that share a desire to work together to improve health and environmental conditions. At its young age, FAMU-FSU EWB has already accomplished a lot and our Chapter prides itself on positively impacting both the local Tallahassee community and communities abroad.

Our chapter donates many hours of community service to various local causes. Students from FAMU FSU Engineers Without Borders have maintained school structures in Tallahassee, helped in the building and repair of
local homes, assisted in the development of a water distribution system for the city of Monticello, and traveled to New Orleans to participate in Post Hurricane Katrina cleanup activities.

In Summer of 2008 FAMU FSU Engineers without borders sent a team of students to the Peruvian village of San Rafael to upgrade an inadequate water distribution system. Our chapter intends to return in the summer of 2009 to improve the filtration system currently in use. We also plan on having local projects inorder to help local communities in Tallahassee an around our area.

Come out and use your skills to solve the problems of the local and developing world. We welcome any professionals, and students who are committed to improving the quality of life of people in disadvantaged communities, especially those with experience in public health, project management, construction, accounting, and fundraising.
