About Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Innovative thinking and an entrepreneurial mindset are keys to any engineer's success individually and to their contributions to technological and social progress. The Entrepreneur in Residence in the College, who reports directly to the Dean, is charged with working collegially with all faculty, administrators, and students to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship. The College is actively expanding the number of programs and activities to help achieve these goals.

  • Engineering Sharks Swarm to Innovation, April 13, 2016: The College's 2nd Annual Student Technology Business Pitch Competition with $2,500 in prizes.
  • Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Course: A team-based projects course to teach the process of creating and analyzing commercialization plans for technology-based products or services.
  • Engineering Shark Tank, April 13, 2016: The College's 1st Annual Student Technology Business Pitch Competition with $2,500 in prizes.
  • Entrepreneur in Residence: Dr. Mike Devine is the Entrepreneur in Residence for the College and a Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Society of Engineering Entrepreneurs: This new student organization was founded in 2014 and is rapidly expanding its' programs and activities. (SEE logo and link to their website http://seefamufsu.strikingly.com/#events )
  • Pathways to Innovation program: In 2015 the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering this national program designed to help institutions transform the experience of their undergraduate engineering students and fully incorporate innovation and entrepreneurship into a range of courses as well as strengthen co- and extra-curricular offerings. It is funded by the National Science Foundation and run by Stanford University and Venture Well

Technology Entrepreneurship & Commercialization (TEC) Course

3 Credit Hours: Open to both undergraduate and graduate students
Offered every semester (as long as demand exists)

Although the TEC course is primarily offered to enhance the entrepreneurial skills of students in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, it is open to advanced undergraduate and graduate students of all disciplines. The course simulates, in an academic environment, the process of creating and analyzing business plans for technology-based products or services. Students will form teams and propose technology-based ideas/opportunities. Each team will then analyze the business potential of the idea, addressing key aspects such as competing technologies, the most appropriate target market, intellectual property protection, and the best business model for financial success. The student teams will present the findings from their project in both a final written report and an oral presentation.

In addition to the team projects, the course will include lectures from guest speakers and class discussions on such topics as entrepreneurship, technology product development, lean startup concepts, patent and copyright law, how to conduct a technology market study, sources of financing for start-up companies, and case studies from successful entrepreneurs.

InnoVenture Weekend

Innoventure Weekend is a fun two-day innovation and business pitch competition sponsored by:

  • The Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship at FSU
  • The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering
  • FSU Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO)
  • Institute for Successful Longevity (ISL)

Open to all FAMU and FSU Engineering students and FSU students of all majors. The event will be held at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, located in Innovation Park, Tallahassee.

The Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering reports to the Dean of Engineering and works collegially with administrators, faculty and students in Engineering and across both the FSU and FAMU campuses. The goal is to promote a culture of entrepreneurship that will enhance engineering students' education and their career options, while also boosting the commercialization of inventions from the college's research. The following are examples of EIR responsibility and activity:

  • Teach a course for engineering students, but open to students from all disciplines, on technology-based entrepreneurship and technology commercialization. The Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization class helps students understand the process of creating and analyzing business plans for new technology-based products or services.
  • Create an Entrepreneurial Option in Engineering Senior Design Projects. The EIR will work with each department to give students the option to select entrepreneurial projects which focus on developing a commercially viable product or process for their Senior Design Project.
  • Organize workshops, seminars and other special events on technology entrepreneurship. These are coordinated and planned with faculty in other academic units across the FSU and FAMU campus.
  • Promote and help organize the participation of engineering students in commercialization/business plan competitions locally, regionally and nationally.
  • Encourage and assist faculty in commercializing their inventions, including helping prepare GAP, SBIR/STTR, etc. grant proposals to boost activity and improve success rates.
  • Lead the effort to establish an engineering technology commercialization lab and business incubator that could be used by faculty and students to develop prototypes of their commercial ideas and serve as incubator for early stage businesses.
