EEL 4021 - Statistical Topics in Electrical Engineering
Curriculum Designation: Required for electrical engineering and computer engineering majors.
Course Description: Use of probability and statistical concepts in electrical engineering applications. Elementary probability - sets, sample spaces, axioms, joint and conditional probability. Random variables - distribution and density functions. Operations in random variables - expectation, moments, transformation of random variables. Multiple random variables. Introduction to random processes. Elements of statistics: parameter estimation and hypothesis testing.
Prerequisites: MAP 3306 or MAS 3105, and EEL 3112
Course Objectives:
- Apply elementary set theory and counting techniques to solve basic combinatorial problems.
- Solve problems involving basic and conditional probability.
- Apply common probability models to solve engineering problems.
- Calculate the moments and central moments of a random variable.
- Analyze functions of random variable.
- Analyze multiple random variables.
- Perform linear regression analysis on a set of data.
- Apply probability theory to estimation theory and engineering decisions.
- Analyze elements of random processes.

Class Schedule: Three 50 minute or two 75 minute lectures per week (3 credit hours).
