Depth Areas

The Department offers two depth areas for graduate students. All the graduate students have to take the courses and obtain a grade of B or better in at least one of the depth areas listed below.

Areas 1: Communications, Controls, and Systems based

  1. EEL 5173: Signal and system analysis
  2. EEL 5667: Robotics
  3. EEL 5590: Advanced topics in communication

Area 2: Devices, Electronics, and Fields based

  1. EEL 5173: Signal and system analysis
  2. EEE 6353: Semiconductor device theory
  3. EEL 5486: Advanced electromagnetic theory

Math-equivalent courses for M.S. students:

M.S. students need to take one at least 3 credit hours of a course in advanced mathematics, typically a 5000 level course or above, or one or more of the following departmental approved substitutes:

  1. EEL 5025: Computational Electrical Engineering
  2. EEL 5542: Random Processes
