Dr. Richard Liang awarded FSU’s Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentor Award
Oct 2009 - IME Professor Dr. Richard Liang was recently awarded FSU’s Outstanding Graduate Faculty Mentor Award. Sponsored annually by the Graduate School, this award honors faculty mentors whose dedication to graduate students and commitment to excellence in graduate education and mentoring have made a significant contribution to the quality of life and professional development of graduate students at Florida State University. This award notes that Dr. Liang demonstrated outstanding mentoring practices and an overall commitment to graduate education at Florida State University.
DOE Fellowship Award applications being accepted until November 30, 2009
Oct. 2009 - The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science (SC) has established the DOE Office of Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE SCGF) program to provide support for outstanding students to pursue graduate training in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, computational sciences, and environmental sciences relevant to the Office of Science and to encourage the development of the next generation scientific and technical talent in the U.S.
Fellows will receive a $35,000 yearly stipend for living expenses, $10, 500 per year for tuition and fees and a $5,000 research stipend supplement for research materials and travel expenses. Fellows will be required to participate in the annual DOE SCGF Research Conference to be held each summer at a DOE national laboratory. Travel expenses and accommodations to the Conference will be provided by the DOE SCGF program.

SME Names Buckypaper Technology to Innovations That Could Change the Way You Manufacture
(Jul. 2009) Buckypaper technology was cited by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers among the Innovations That Could Change the Way You Manufacture. The award is an SME member-driven initiative that reveals new and emerging technologies that are expected to impact the future of manufacturing.
Dr. Ben Wang wins the David F. Baker Researcher Award
Dr. Ben Wang, professor with the Industrial Engineering Department and director of the High-Performance Materials Institute, was recently awarded the David F. Baker Research Award. The Institute of Industrial Engineers presents the award to recognize outstanding research in the profession. It is given for a career of accomplishments that broadly benefited practitioners, organizations, or other researchers rather than for a single activity or application. The award is named for David F. Baker, Ph.D., late chairman of the industrial engineering department at The Ohio State University.
IME Student Evan Anderson wins 2009 Ford HBCU Business Classic Competition
Evan Anderson, FAMU-FSU College of Engineering won the 2009 Ford HBCU Business Classic Competition. As the grand prize winner, the student team won $35,000 in personal scholarships and $15,000 for FAMU. Read the full story here.
Center of Excellence sponsered students from Manatee County to compete at National Skills USA Championship
Three Mantee County high school students sponsered by Manatee Technical Institute through the Florida Center of Excellence in Advanced Materials will compete in National Skills USA competition in Kansas City. See story here.
Florida State University Evaluated as One of the Best Value Colleges in the Nation
The Princeton Review ranked The Florida State University as number fifth best value college among the nation's public colleges. According to the USA Today, the overall selection criteria included more than 30 factors in three areas: academics, costs and financial aid. Academic ratings were based on student surveys about such issues as professors' accessibility and class sizes, as well as institutional reports about student-faculty ratios and percent of classes taught by teaching assistants. IME 19th in Awarding IE Degrees and 4th in Federal Funding
According to data released in April by the American Society for Engineering Education, the IME Department ranked 19th in the nation in the Industrial Engineering Degrees awarded in 2007.
In related news, according to the ASEE database, in 2007 the IME Department ranked fourth among all IE departments in the country for the amount of federal research funding/faculty.
HPMI Buckypaper Technology wins Nano 50 Award
Students, researchers and faculty members at the High-Performance Materials Institute (HPMI) at Florida State University were recently recognized in the fourth annual Nanotech Briefs Nano 50 Awards for their work with an innovative material called buckypaper. (See article.)
Buckypaper technology wins Micro/Nano 25 Award
HPMI's Engineered Carbon Nanotube (CNT) and Nanofiber Buckypapers was selected by the editors of R&D Magazine and MICRO/NANO Newsletter as one of the most innovative products of 2007 in the Inaugural MICRO/NANO 25 Competition. See the complete listing of award winners here.
