Welcome to the Department of
Chemical & Biomedical Engineering

Student at work- image

The Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, one of five departments in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, is composed of an active, faculty emphasizing a balance of teaching and research in forefront areas of modern chemical and biomedical engineering. Our department has already made an impact on the field in many aspects of education and research. We offer B.S. (ABET-accredited), M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering. Fourteen full-time instructional faculty, a full-time research associate and academic advisor, and several part-time and affiliated professors comprise the faculty. The student body consists of about 150 undergraduates and 35 graduate students. The student chapter of the national professional organization, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), continues to publish “The Innovator”, an annual newsletter that focuses on both student and faculty teaching and research activities.

Undergraduate students may choose one of five majors within the BS degree in Chemical Engineering, including Chemical, Environmental, Bioengineering, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering. Graduate degrees (M.S. and Ph.D.) are granted in both Chemical Engineering and in Biomedical Engineering.

Major departmental research efforts are active in the following areas: multiphase transport processes, reaction modeling and analysis, polymer characterization and crystallization, bioconversion of complex organic materials, nuclear magnetic resonance studies of materials and biological samples, optimization and control of batch reactors, non-equilibrium processes, environmental hazards mitigation, electrochemical engineering, dynamics and separation of biological macromolecules, cellular and tissue engineering, colloidal engineering, fuel cell technology, and neural engineering. Active research collaborations continue with the Florida State University Institute of Molecular Biophysics, School of Computational Science and Information Technology, National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Biomedical Research Facility (Laboratory Animal Resources), and Departments of Chemistry, Physics, and Biological Sciences; the Florida A&M University Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; and the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Departments of Mechanical, Electrical, and Industrial Engineering.
