FAMU Graduation Checklist

In addition to completing the requirements specified by your academic department, there are several very important steps you need to take to graduate at the end of a particular semester. They are as follows:

  1. Complete the Research and Project Approval Form at least one semester prior to your expected graduation date.
  2. Be aware of Academic Deadlines
  3. Register
  4. Apply for Graduation
  5. Prepare your Manuscript (Does not apply to non-thesis students)
  6. Announce your Defense and Successfully Defend (Does not apply to non-thesis students)
  7. Complete the College of Engineering Graduation Checklist
  8. Submit your final manuscript to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research

These steps are described in detail below.

STEP 1 - Complete the Research and Project Approval Form at least one semester prior to your expected graduation date.

  1. You must have your defense committee approved at least one semester prior to your expected graduation date. Please complete the Research and Project Approval Form. This requirement does not apply to non-thesis students.
  2. You are also strongly encourage to come to the Office of the Associate Dean, Room B-223 to have a graduation check performed at least one semester prior to your expected graduation date.

STEP 2 - Be aware of Academic Deadlines

STEP 3 - Register

  1. You must be enrolled in the semester you expect to graduate. You need to enroll in a minimum of two hours, if you have completed all other degree requirements except for defense. Otherwise, check with your graduate coordinator to determine the number of hours you will need to complete.
  2. You must have registered for Thesis or Dissertation Defense. If you have previously enrolled in Defense and received a grade of Incomplete, you do not need to enroll again. (Does not apply to non-thesis students).

STEP 4 - Apply for Graduation

  1. During the first two weeks of your final term, you must apply for graduation. This is an online process now. Please see the Registrar's website for details. If you had previously applied for graduation, but did not receive the degree, you must apply again.
  2. All questions regarding the Commencement Ceremony should be directed to the FAMU Registrar's Office.

STEP 5 - Prepare your Manuscript (Does not apply to non-thesis students)

STEP 6 - Announce your Defense and Successfully Defend (Does not apply to non-thesis students)

  1. You must announce your defense at least two weeks before your defense date. Please complete a Defense Announcement Form. You may be asked to defend again, if you fail to announce your defense!!!
  2. You will also need to post your defense announcement on the College of Engineering's Events Calendar. Indicate the type of defense (either Thesis or Dissertation) under Event Type.
  3. Defend your dissertation or thesis. See your academic advisor for any special instructions that you should follow.
  4. Within five business days of your defense, you must submit a Defense Outcome Form to the Office of the Associate Dean, Room B-223, FAMU-FSU College of Engineering..

STEP 7- Complete the College of Engineering Graduation Checklist

  1. After you have successfully defended, the College of Engineering will check the following before recommending awarding of your degree to the university:
    • Are you enrolled for at least two hour in the current semester?
    • Did you apply for graduation?
    • Do you have the correct number of coursework hours?
    • Have all of your courses been completed within the time limit of the degree?
    • Have you cleared all Incomplete and Unsatisfactory grades?
    • Is your graduate GPA greater than or equal to 3.00?
    • Have all holds been cleared?
    • Do all DIS courses have titles?

    • The following does NOT apply to non-thesis students.
    • Are you enrolled in thesis or dissertation defense?
    • Do you have the minimum number of thesis or dissertation credits for the degree?
    • Do you have an approved Defense Committee Approval form?
    • Did you submit a Defense Announcement form and post it on the College of Engineering Events Calendar?
    • Do you have an approved "Notification of Defense Outcome" form.
  2. Have your signature page signed by the Academic Dean.

STEP 8 - Final Submission of your Manuscript to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research
